Asking for a Favour

Hi there faithful viewers.

I wonder if I could ask you to do something for me.

In this business of blogging, the name of the game is “traffic.” The more people who take in the content on this blog, the better are my chances of earning a few dollars through the advertising I am placing here and there on this site. I am exploring the various ways that are recommended for increasing viewership, but they seem a little complicated and the lessons are having a difficult time penetrating my rather thick skull.

However, having done a lot of business reporting in my career as a journalist, I remember how almost every entrepreneur I ever interviewed eventually got around to saying that “word-of-mouth” was the best form of advertising. Some of them were fond of telling customers, “If you’re happy with us, tell others. If you’re unhappy, tell us.”

So I am asking you, if you like what you see here, to mention my blog to even one other person who you think might also get some enjoyment from it. I’d call them up myself but I don’t know who your friends are or what time zone they might be in and I am sure they don’t want to hear from me at 4 a.m.

It’s not just about money. Every creative person who puts his or her stuff out there for others wants to share what we create with as many people as possible. I am sure the Beatles would have been happy if a few hundred people in Liverpool loved their music over the years, but it probably thrilled them a little more to know their songs were known and loved by hundreds of millions, if not a billion or two, and still are.

Thanks in advance. And if you like what you see here, maybe take a journey over to my other blog, jimhagarty.com. The stories I publish there are not the same ones that appear here though they are drawn from the same well which is my archive of over 50 years of published stories. On this site, lifetimesentences.com, I try to publish more than just my writing, but on jimhagarty.com, I publish my own stuff only, no photos, or music. If photos and music do eventually make it onto that site, they will be material I created myself.

I am so happy to have you along and if you have ever smiled at a few of the words I have strung together, that makes me feel pretty good.

I am a 72-year-old retired journalist, busy recovering from a lifelong career as an unretired journalist. This year marks a half century of my scratching out little fables about life. My interests include genealogy, humour and music. I live in a little blue shack in Canada and spend most of my time trying to stay out of trouble. I am not that good at it. I also spent years teaching journalism. Poor state of journalism today: My fault. I have a family I don't deserve, a dog that adores me, and two cars the junk yard refuses to accept. My prized possessions include my old guitar and a razor my Dad gave me when I was 14 and which I still use when I bother to shave. Oh, and my great-great-grandfather's blackthorn stick he brought from Ireland in the 1850s. I have only one opinion but it is a good one: People take too many showers.
